Lorraine Snape explores performative artwork as construction, contraption or installation, raiding the chemistry kit and the joke shop before taking wider inspiration from science and nature. The majority of her work recycles found and reclaimed objects which she pairs with off-the-shelf items to produce irrelevant machines and conceptual staging.
Fascinated with the materiality of things and conversely elusiveness itself, through site specific installations and interventions in the landscape, she aims to spark curiosity and ignite a sense of awe. The work is playful, with an anarchic sense of humour, celebrating everyday moments of wonder whilst nervously hinting at impending doom.
Lorraine graduated from Chelsea College of Arts in 2021 with an MA Fine Art (Distinction) and is a member of AltMFA, the peer led alternative art school. She has exhibited in group shows in London and around the UK, as well as overseas, including China. Snape also co-curated the first online iteration of Late at Tate Britain and sees curation as part of her broader practice.
